Analysing South Africa’s renewable energy ipp procurement programme bid window 5 results

South Africa has finally re-opened bidding windows for its renewable energy IPP procurement programme (REI4P). Power Futures Lab is hosting a webinar to analyse and discuss the preferred bidders’ announcement for REI4P Bid Window 5. The announcement comes after a 6-year hiatus in procurement, and is set to be the first of several new procurement rounds by national government. At the same time we are seeing an opening up of the energy sector to procurement by local government and the private sector, spurred on by a number of important recent regulatory reforms.

Our distinguished panel will analyse the announced prices from BW5, the composition of the preferred bidder pool and any announced economic development commitments to give us a sense of the current and future direction of the sector. Discussions will also focus on the impacts of grid constraints and the likely evolution of the REI4P programme (incl. BW6 and 7).

The Power Futures Lab at the UCT GSB is a leading centre of excellence and expertise. We are dedicated to enhancing understanding and building capacity in infrastructure investment, reform and regulation, in support of sustainable development In Africa and other emerging economies. Our main focus at present is in electricity and water, but growth is expected in the gas sector.
