Incredible Strategies is the place where we are collecting* the most interesting thoughts on strategy. And I'd love you to join me.
We do strategy every day whether we are aware of it or not. In business and in life, thinking ahead and plotting out how we are going to get there is strategic in nature.
Some do it better than others and some people are naturally strategic. Strategy itself dates back many centuries although it seems that it is still shrouded in mystery and reserved for some elite group of people who are experts in strategy.
My experience of strategy in the business world, is that the theory seldom meets the practice and I've seen numerous fantastic strategies that never see the light of day.
Why do some work and others not. I believe it is about people. Most of the stuff I've found written about strategy in the modern business texts is theoretical, long winded and not very useful in the real world.
For some of the most profound writing on strategy we need to go back to the 15th century to read Sun Tzu's timeless classic, The Art of War
. His concepts are as relevant today as they were all those centuries ago.
We can look to The Art of War
for an answer to why many strategies don't work.
Sun Tzu says, "He will win whose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks.
We would find it hard to name a company that has been successful for a long time who doesn't have most of their people animated by the same spirit. (Strategy consultants would say 'aligned')
And conversely the well known companies who have failed in the last period (Enron, Lehman etc...) certainly didn't have their people all animated by the same spirit.
